Plastic is fantastic protection for the auriscope earpiece.

ONE advantage of editing a tips column is that I actually remember most of the handy hints when the situation arises.

I used this one from Dr May Ann Ho of Kallaroo, WA, when the pictured English backpacker fell off a cliff in Kakadu recently.

When using an auriscope to look up the nostrils, the earpiece doesn’t necessarily protect the instrument from contamination by blood or mucus.

Cover it with a disposable plastic cover from a digital thermometer. I just had to fiddle around a bit to avoid reflective glare.
