MEDICAL Observer, together with the Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI), has won a $10,000 Queensland Government grant to help Brisbane GPs go green and reduce their carbon footprint.

The ClimateSmart Business Clusters grant from the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management will be used to fund 20 practices in the Brisbane metropolitan area to participate in MO’s Low Carbon Doctors Initiative.

Practices across Brisbane are invited to enter MO’s ‘Climate Smart’ competition. The 20 winning practices will attend a half-day weekend workshop in June and August, where they will receive information on energy efficiency and taking action on climate change.

Practices will be invited to set energy saving and emissions goals, and throughout the year they will be supported in achieving their targets through additional workshops and practice carbon audits.

The savings on greenhouse gas emissions, energy and waste for each practice will be collated in November, and practices will be awarded a certificate confirming their achievements.

CRI projects director Andrew Barson said the ultimate goal was to engage GP practices to measure their footprint and take action to reduce it as well as become climate role models in the community.

The Business Clusters program is designed to assist Queensland businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, improve resource efficiency and consider more sustainable alternatives to current business practices.
