Resurrection of the creative doctor

IT WAS never going to stay dormant for long – just four months after the Creative Doctors Network announced its stage death, the artistic medico group is back under the new leadership of three GPs.

Lack of poetic justice inspires award-winning GP

Finding inspiration for poetry can be difficult when you’re a doctor – there is often a lot of dark subject matter and not a whole lot of light, says GP and medical administrator Dr Chris Swan. Presenting at last week’s AMA (NSW) Creative Doctors night, Dr Swan, told his audience that while his wife has accused him of writing a lot of dark poetry, most of his work is “the sunshine part”. Dr Swan’s poem, ‘Laughter from the back of the Ambulance’, won the people’s choice award. “They need to make the unthinkable unthought,” Dr Swan ...

Fortune shines on forbidden talent

IT WAS a pastel crayon in a dorm room that started a forbidden pastime for Dr Richard Wu, Sydney psychiatrist and talented artist. From a young age, Dr Wu was forbidden from painting by his father to ensure his focus was entirely on a medical career. It was not until he was in his third year of medical school that he revisited his passion for art after an unknown visitor fortunately left the stick of pastel behind. Dr Wu’s work was a clear crowd favourite at the recent AMA NSW Creative Doctors’ Network (CDN) visual arts ...

Creative doctors bring visual talents into focus

A “VISUAL feast” of photography and painting is to be offered up by doctors in Sydney next week as part of the latest instalment from the AMA (NSW) Creative Doctors Network. Ten doctors will present their photographic and artistic works next Thursday night, including five who are making their debut with the network. Sydney GP Dr Howard Gwynne is one entrant who is returning to present his work.  His stunning photography, which has previously won photography competitions run by his local GP network, is sure to be a highlight of the event.  Dr Gwynne’s work ...

GP brings human cloning to life in short film

THE darker side of medical advances will be up for discussion at this weekend’s Doc-Art Festival, with the special screening of the short film, Mr Morag’s Helical Dreams . The 15-minute film was written, produced and directed by Adelaide GP Dr Alex Nakone and explores the concept of human cloning for therapeutical purposes. It follows the strange case of Mr Morag, a man whose subconscious mind is vexed after he choose to accept a kidney from his clone. “The area of cloning is no longer just a fantasy, it is a scientific reality. I find it ...

Twist on patient relations earns plaudit

AN ALTERNATIVE – and at times uncomfortable – view on sexual relationships between doctors and their patients saw Dr Jan Orman named the favourite author at the recent readings night hosted by the Creative Doctors Network. Inspired by past media reports on the professional misconduct of deregistered doctors, the piece, My Gift, My Calling , was told from the point of view of the doctor, defending and justifying their actions. Dr Orman’s piece generated a great deal of discussion among attendees, however the Sydney GP said her intent was about “developing an understanding of other people’s ...

Doctors' artistic talents on show at inaugural Doc Art Festival

FROM magnificent landscape photography to stirring improvised performances, the artistic talents of doctors were on full display last weekend at the inaugural Doc Art Festival. Organised by the Creative Doctors Network (CDN), the festival celebrated the work of doctors in four key areas: photography, writing, film and performance. In keeping with the festival theme of nurturing, Dr Anne Gunner won the writing category with a short story on the caring of a patient lost to dementia, while Dr M. Imran Marzook won the photography category with a sepia-washed picture of parents and their children waiting at a ...

Festival embraces doctors’ creative side

GP author Dr Jacinta Halloran has stepped forward as the first entrant in the inaugural Doc-ART Festival, an event designed to celebrate the creativity of Australian doctors. Established by the AMA (NSW) Creative Doctors Network, the festival encourages doctors to submit new artistic works on the chosen theme of ‘nurturing’. Entrants can submit works to be judged in one of four categories: photography, writing, film or performance. Dr Halloran – whose first novel, Dissection , was shortlisted in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards – has written a short story on changing family relationships prompted by illness. ...

Poetry an antidote to GP stress

POETRY makes for some of the best medicine, according to Bega GP Dr Tim Metcalf, and could ease many a stressed doctor’s suffering. Speaking at the Creative Doctors Network (CDN) Readings night, Dr Metcalf described his passion for the written word, and how it had provided a much-needed outlet for the gamut of emotions he encountered throughout his medical career. “We are supposed to be ‘super gods’, but there is a lot of suffering out there in our profession,” he said. “I am deeply concerned about the levels of stress in our profession, and some of ...

New group gives doctors artistic licence

CREATIVITY is not a word commonly associated with general practice, however a fledgling organisation is now hoping to change that. Established late last year, the Creative Doctors Network (CDN) – headed by Wollongong paediatrician Dr Tony Chu – aims to support and inspire doctors to tap into their artistic talents. “Doctors have very stressful lives, and creative pursuits can help with an outlet for that. We aim to help doctors participate in these pursuits and hopefully achieve a better work-life balance,” he said. Dr Chu has a long-standing interest in film-making and acting, and established the ...
