Hooking in to a back saver

Hooking in to a back saver

IN THE spirit of innovation, regular tipster Dr Frank Zhu from Port Macquarie has actually patented this idea in the US, but sends in a ‘home made’ version for the benefit of his fellow GPs. His invention is designed for people with back pain, to shift the weight of a bag from their spine to their hips. Bend a wire into a double hook, as illustrated, then clip the upper hook over a belt or the waist band of a pair of jeans. The bag handle slips over the outer hook. Ingenious. Every ...

Putting scripts back in their box

Putting scripts back in their box

We ALL have patients who lose track of their repeat prescriptions, ask for new ones months early, then end up with more discarded scripts than a Warner Bros studio.

Hands-free ‘marsupial’ stubby holder

When both hands are busy with crutches, or even one hand with a walking stick, it can be difficult to access odds and ends such as asthma sprays, keys or a water bottle...

Reeling in the rods

This GP is not the first to have suggested this idea on how to deal with implanon rods, but he is the first to have sent in a clear photo of the procedure

A classic flush

A classic flush

There have been many variations of this tip sent in over the years – either it’s well known already (therefore publishing it would be redundant) or is repeatedly considered very useful. Dr Mark McGrath had no ear syringe available during a nursing home visit in Cleveland, Qld. He found a 60 ml syringe used for flushing blocked catheters. He fitted an otoscope ear piece (paediatric size gives a faster stream) and flushed the ear canal comfortably.

Dr Simon Pilbrow from Rosebud, Victoria, has a great idea for home-made orthotic inserts for heel spurs. Purchase non-slip rubber mesh from your local $2 shop and fold it into a five layer thickness. Cut it into the shape and width (approximately 5cm) of a shoe heel. Leaving the top layer intact, cut a coin-sized hole out of the next two layers, then flip the top layer back into position. For added foot comfort, bevel the anterior edge of the insert, leaving the top layer the longest.

GPs set inspiring example

DOCTORS across the country are increasingly tuning into the environment and implementing changes to make their homes and practices more sustainable, the MO Green Tips competition has revealed. Over the past two months, more than 150 GPs have entered the competition, sharing tips as simple as switching off appliances at the wall, to innovative ideas such as converting foam packaging into garden fertiliser. According to Dr Graeme Horton, spokesman for Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA), the list of entries was inspirational. “You can see that, when it comes to living in ...

Sixty-point plan for solving climate change

Sixty-point plan for solving climate change

CLIMATE change is a “planetary emergency” we can no longer afford to ignore and, according to Brisbane GP Dr Sandra Bayley (pictured), doctors have an important role in solving the problem. When it comes to climate change, the winner of the MO Green Tips competition not only leads by example by undertaking energy-saving measures, she also makes time to discuss the issue with her patients. “I believe the evidence is now irrefutable that our activities have led to climate change, and we have to take responsibility for that,” she says. ...
