US progress on heart valve surgery

AS FOREIGN Minister Kevin Rudd prepares to undergo an operation to replace his aortic valve, cardiologists in America have endorsed a new type of artificial valve inserted via a femoral catheter. Mr Rudd confirmed on Wednesday that he would undergo a procedure to replace his prosthetic aortic valve next month. While it was unknown which type of valve Mr Rudd would have inserted, the news came as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel said the benefits of the new Sapien aortic heart valve outweighed the risks for patients who could not undergo traditional valve ...

Men’s health policy is ‘clever’ but lacks detail

HEALTH experts have cautiously welcomed the Government’s long-awaited national men’s health policy, but say implementing its initiatives will be the vital step. The policy, entitled Building on the Strengths of Australian Males, was launched last week by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Minister for Indigenous, Rural and Regional Health, Warren Snowdon, and included $16.7 million in funding commitments. Mr Snowdon said the policy, developed after extensive consultations, had among its objectives coordinating approaches to improving men’s health, improving the use of existing health resources by men and identifying and targeting men with poor health outcomes. ...

Academics punch more holes in health reform plan

ACADEMICS have continued to question the strength of the Rudd Government’s health reform plan, claiming it contains significant pitfalls that will have to be avoided. The criticisms emerged the day after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was said to have convincingly won the health debate against Opposition Leader Tony Abbott. During the 75-minute debate, Mr Rudd restated his case for the Federal Government to become the dominant funder of public hospitals, and the sole funder of primary care services. He also signalled the Federal Government could consider taking on 100% of hospital funding at a later stage ...

Federal Government unveils hospital takeover plan

THE Federal Government has announced plans to become the dominant funder of hospital services across the country, as the first step in its long-awaited health and hospitals reform plan. Under the new funding arrangements outlined today by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the Government plans to take over 60% of the funding for public hospitals with Local Hospital Networks, to be run by local clinical leaders, established to administer services. The Government will also assume responsibility for all GP and primary care services. “By taking full funding and policy responsibility for primary care we can also reduce ...

Federal takeover of hospitals expected soon

Federal takeover of hospitals expected soon

THE Federal Government’s long-awaited health plan is expected to be announced within days, with a federal takeover of public hospital funding widely tipped to top the list of health reforms. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is expected to broadly follow the recommendations of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC), and shift to a single funder for health services. According to media reports, this will be achieved via the establishment of regional health authorities, which will manage money distributed from a national funding pool. Funding would be awarded to public hospitals based on activities carried out, ...

Patients back GPs in reform fight

MORE than 800 patients have signed a petition urging the Federal Government to exercise caution in pursuing its health reform agenda with regard to nurse practitioners and GP super clinics. Organised by the recently established Doctors Action group, the petition asks the House of Representatives to ensure the doctor-patient relationship is maintained within the reforms. The group has also sent an open letter to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd expressing GP opposition to any policy weakening the doctor-patient relationship or fragmenting care. The group was formed at a meeting in Western Sydney attended by nearly 100 GPs, ...

PM praised for fact-finding rural GP visit

A RECENT visit by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to a rural South Australian practice has been praised by country doctors as a sign the Government is keen to address regional Australia’s poor health services. During a visit last week to the Murray Bridge Clinic, the practice of immediate past RDAA president Dr Peter Rischbieth, Mr Rudd discussed issues including the need for greater infrastructure supports, supports for IMGs, and rural loadings on Medicare payments.

Doctors bombard Rudd’s rural blog

DESPERATE to air their grievances about the state of healthcare, doctors are heading to the top, bypassing Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and instead contacting the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. The RDAA has encouraged rural doctors to take full advantage of Mr Rudd’s remote and rural healthcare system blog website, which seeks feedback on workforce issues and the Government’s health reform agenda. NSW South Coast GP Dr Brett Thomson, one of the rural doctors who have flooded Mr Rudd’s website, said GPs felt their views were being ignored in the Government’s push for health reform. “I ...
