Couple not guilty of illegal abortion

A YOUNG Cairns couple charged with illegally procuring an abortion have been found not guilty. A Cairns District Court jury took less than an hour to find Tegan Simone Leach, 21, and Sergie Brennan, 22, not guilty of procuring an abortion and supplying drugs to procure an abortion. The couple were charged in February last year after police found empty blister packs of mifepristone (RU-486) and misoprostol, which were illegally imported from the Ukraine, during a search of their home on an unrelated matter. The couple admitted that Ms Leach had taken the drugs because they ...

Thousands of women now choosing medical abortion

INCREASING numbers of women are choosing to medically terminate their pregnancies, with more than 2600 using mifepristone in 2009. According to the TGA figures, only 227 women underwent medical abortion in 2008, but now some 81 doctors around Australia are authorised to prescribe mifepristone. The growing preference for  medical abortion with mifepristone (plus misoprostol) has been revealed as a new survey confirms broad support by GPs for women’s right to abortion. The survey of 517 GPs, conducted for abortion provider Marie Stopes International Australia, found 87% felt termination services should be available to all women. ...

LIGHT bleeding for up to 30 days is normal after a medical abortion, according to Marie Stopes International Australia. The organisation can now offer the mifepristone (RU-486)/misoprostol option to women under nine weeks’ gestation in five states under the TGA’s Authorised Prescriber scheme. Marie Stopes national clinical adviser Jill Michelson said while bleeding following the regimen slowed down quickly within about 24 hours, light bleeding tended to continue longer than after a surgical termination. “[But] if women are getting heavy bleeding, soaking two or more large pads per hour for two consecutive hours, then that is ...

Legal fears over RU-486 move

EXPERTS are at odds over whether new moves by Marie Stopes International to provide Queensland women with medical abortion will contravene the state’s outdated laws, and put patients and doctors at risk of prosecution. Fourteen doctors working for Marie Stopes International were last week granted a licence by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to provide the controversial RU-486 abortion drug to women, just two months after Cairns-based gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Caroline de Costa stopped prescribing it. Dr de Costa – who was the first medical professional in Australia to be granted a licence to prescribe RU-486 – ...
