THE grisly murder of a Red Cross worker and a video showing an American hostage pleading for his life highlight a perilous security situation in Pakistan that aid groups say is endangering their work.

Red Cross fined for compliance failures

THE US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has fined the American Red Cross $US16.18 million [$18.4 million] for failing to comply with federal laws for the collection and manufacture of blood products. An FDA press release announced the charity had been fined $US9.79 million ($11 million) for mismanagement of certain blood products and $US6.39 million ($7.9 million) for good manufacturing practice violations.  However, the FDA issued a statement reassuring patients and blood donors regarding the safety of the blood supply, and reporting that the violations had not endangered any patients.
