Late talking in toddlers not a cause for worry
TODDLERS who are “late talkers” are at no increased risk of later behavioural and emotional problems, according to research that tracked Australian children into their late teens. The WA-based study found young children who lagged behind the language skills of their peers at two years of age, but who had no other developmental delay, usually went through a “catch-up” phase before their school years. DRINKING small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy may confer a lower risk of behavioural and cognitive problems in children, controversial new British research reveals. However, the findings will not alter Australian advice, an expert says. A study of 18,553 UK households found mothers who drank lightly – not more than one to two units per week or per occasion – had children with higher scores on a validated questionnaire of behavioural strengths and difficulties at three years of age compared to abstinent or heavier-drinking mothers. More behavioural problems seen in kids after IVF
CHILDREN conceived by IVF are more likely to display some behavioural problems by the age of 18 years, a small study has found. The researchers compared 26 IVF families with 38 adoptive families and 63 families in which children were naturally conceived. More IVF teens had conduct problems, including physical aggression, leading to suspension or expulsion from school, researcher Lucy Blake from the University of Cambridge told the Fertility Society of Australia congress in Brisbane last week. However, she cautioned that the numbers were small, and that overall the IVF children were well adjusted.
