US orthopaedic surgeons have cautioned against using popular ‘metal on metal’ hip prostheses amid growing concern the implants can cause severe tissue and bone damage, The New York Times reports. Despite 250,000 ‘metal on metal’ hip replacements being performed annually in the US, research shows the prostheses, made from chromium and cobalt, can wear down.
