Safety of smoking cessation products under review

AUSTRALIAN regulators are reviewing the safety of widely used smoking cessation products varenicline (Champix) and bupropion (Zyban and generic alternatives) after a number of reports of serious neuropsychiatric symptoms following their use. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that following analysis of post-marketing adverse events, it would require manufacturers to add black box warnings regarding the risk of suicidal ideation and behaviour in patients with no history of psychiatric illness. REPORTS of adverse reactions to the anti-smoking drug varenicline (Champix) have increased markedly since it was listed on the PBS at the beginning of the year. The Adverse Drug Reactions Bulletin warned it was “increasingly likely with accumulating evidence that there is an association between varenicline and serious neuropsychiatric events”. To October 2008, there had been 339 reports of adverse reactions to the drug, 255 of which related to psychiatric symptoms.
